FT tops iPad poll

Online publication, Editor & Publisher, reports that London's Financial Times won an Apple Design Award this week for its iPad app -- the only news app of the five winners at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, in San Francisco. The awards recognize iPhone and iPad OS applications that "demonstrate technical excellence, innovation, technology adoption, and quality."

"Initial downloads and average session lengths continue to exceed our expectations," FT.com Managing Director Rob Grimshaw said in a statement.

The app enables users to: download the daily FT to an iPad for offline reading; access content across all sections of FT.com; customize the app to show key sections of the interface (e.g., World, Companies, Markets); view FT video content (the first time the FT has offered video on one of its mobile products); view a dedicated Markets Data section, including macromaps highlighting world markets across (with an option to also view regional indices and company information sheets); view personal investment portfolios: and see the latest "must-read" stories for the iPad edition, determined by the FT editorial team.

Already downloaded 150,000 times in its first three weeks, the FT's iPad app also has aided the bottom line, with 20% of all FT.com subscriptions coming through the app since its launch, according to international business and finance daily.

The free app is integrated into FT.com's access model whereby registered users can access 10 free articles per month before having to subscribe. Luxury watchmaker Hublot will continue to sponsor completely free access to FT content through the end of July, following free registration.
